Every year, experts at Pantone Color Institute travel the world analyzing trends and looking at color influences in everything from art to lifestyle. They use their research and findings to decide on the Pantone Color of the Year, which then tends to influence fashion and all types of design. After exhaustive research, Pantone recently announced the 2019 Color of the Year: Living Coral.
The company describes Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral as “vibrant, yet mellow” and says it’s “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” It was chosen as a reaction to the constant influx of digital technology and social media we all face and they believe people are “seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.” Living Coral is supposed to represent this and fuses modern life with a color that appears in nature.
We like that it’s vibrant and bold. While it’s a harder (though not impossible) color to pull off on say your living room walls, it’s gorgeous in accents like rugs, artwork and even painted furniture. It’s a showstopper when used correctly. Coral is also surprisingly versatile. Go retro by pairing it with vintage pieces, create a bohemian statement by mixing it in with deep intense shades like reds and pinks, keep it fresh by using it with brighter neutrals like white or play it off of dark, moody tones. The possibilities are endless. Here are some ways we’ve seen it in action:
